Mezzotint Procedure

Mezzotint was invented by an amateur artist, Ludwig von Siegen, in the 17th century.

By “rocking” the copper plate in different directions, with the implement called “rocker” (1), the groung
is created by incising burrs (2).This enables the artist to produce a solid, matte surface that prints
a velvet black when ink is applied to the plate.

The image is produced by “shaving the burrs”
or delicately pushing the ground (3).
The more the ground is pushed the shinier the plate becomes. This is known as burnishing (4).

Ink is applied on the copper by hand (5), and then wiped with cheese cloth (6), printing is done in an etching press (7-8).


Procédé de la Manière noire

La manière noire a été inventée au XVIIe siècle
par un artiste amateur, Ludwig von Siegen.

Ce procédé consiste d'abord à grener toute
la surface d'une plaque de cuivre d'environ
un millimètre d'épaisseur (2), à l'aide d'un outil appelé “berceau” (1). L'encre demeurant sur les barbes serrées donnera un noir profond comme celui du velours.

Ensuite, avec un “grattoir” ou un “brunissoir”
faire apparaître les blancs (3), correspondant
à l'image (4).

Puis mettre de l'encre sur la plaque (5), essuyer avec la tarlatane (6), et enfin appliquer une feuille de papier mouillée à l'avance (7) et tirer sur
la presse (8).
